Starting Therapy

Starting therapy often comes with mixed feelings. You may feel hopeful, uncertain, nervous, or all of the above. We offer a free 20-minute phone consultation to answer your questions, and learn more about what brings you to therapy.

Finding a therapist who feels like a good fit is an important part of the process. A strong therapeutic relationship is built on safety and trust over time, making it easier to share your inner thoughts and feelings openly. Many clients begin to experience this sense of fit within the first few sessions.

Individual and couples sessions are typically 50 minutes in length, occurring weekly; some couples sessions are 55 minutes. Weekly sessions are optimal for therapy particularly in the beginning, providing a baseline level of consistency that is essential for the kind of depth of psychological work necessary for therapeutic change to take place. If a different length or frequency is needed, please don’t hesitate to discuss this with your therapist.

How much does therapy cost?

Session fees are within the range for the quality of client-centered, effective therapy our team delivers. We offer a portion of our therapy work at a sliding-scale based on availability and financial need. Some health plans (typically a PPO or POS plan) allow you to choose an out-of-network provider for therapy services.  If you would like to seek partial reimbursement from your insurance, we would be glad to provide a monthly statement of services (or super bill).

We generally recommend meeting weekly at least for the first 2–6 months, as consistency supports meaningful progress. The length of therapy is unique to each person and depends on your goals, the complexity of your concerns, and your engagement in the process. At Nurture, we view therapy as a collaborative journey and regularly check in about how the work is unfolding and whether it continues to meet your needs.

To get started, please reach out via our contact form. We recommend scheduling a free, initial 20-minute phone consultation. During this time, we'll talk about what brings you to therapy, answer your questions, and determine whether we're a good fit.

Once you send us your request via our contact form, a member of the Nurture team will reply on the same day, or within 24 hours. You’ll be connected over email or text with the therapist you have specified, or we are happy to match you.

Yes, we offer in person appointments in San Francisco, and online therapy across California.

A consistent therapy schedule allows us to reserve time specifically for your care. If you need to cancel an appointment, we ask for at least 48 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged the full session fee.

If you need to reschedule your appointment within the same calendar week, 24 hours' notice is sufficient and the late cancellation fee will be waived, provided another appointment time is available. Otherwise, the late cancellation policy will apply.

We are not currently paneled with insurance.
